Donostia is preparing to receive the annual edition of its Book Fair. Starting this Friday, June 30, and until July 9, lovers of reading will be able to enjoy an encounter with literature in all its forms.

With a total of 20 exhibition stands and book sales that will be installed in the Gipuzkoa square, visitors will have access to a wide variety of titles in Basque and Spanish. In addition, as is the tradition at this fair, all books will have a 10% discount. During the event, book presentations, talks and conferences will be held with renowned authors and experts on various topics.

The opening of the fair will be marked by the presentation of the book ‘A rueda’ by Miguel Usabiaga this Friday at 7:00 p.m. The work, which compiles a series of articles on cycling from the years 2020 to 2023, transcends beyond the world of bicycles and cyclists, delving into the stories and experiences that surround this sport.

Within the programming, ‘Letters to a black woman’ by Françoise Ega will also be presented, by Cristina Lizarbe and Ane Eslava next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The author, originally from Martinique and living in France, has written a series of letters to Carolina Maria Jesus, a Brazilian writer who lived in precariousness. In these letters, Ega addresses the slavery faced by domestic workers, and she shares her personal experience after working as a domestic worker to better understand that reality and help abused women.

On Wednesday, at 11:00, the renowned poet Felix Maraña will be present to present his latest work, ‘The forest is not a repeated tree’. In this book, Maraña delights us with sonnets and dreamlets that explore themes such as life, death, and human thought in relation to the natural environment that surrounds us.

In the field of historical essay, the work ’53 storks’ by Eduardo Escobar stands out. The author transports us to August 23, 1936, when fifty-three Republican prisoners left the Pamplona jail with the hope of being exchanged for prisoners of the national side. However, all except Honorino Arteta were murdered in a corral in La Cerdera. Arteta is the one who tells us this moving story. The presentation will be on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

Lovers of the noir genre will also have their space at the fair. Laura Balagué, Javier Sagastiberri and Juan Infante will present ‘A secular investigation’ by Laura Balagué on July 6 at 7:00 p.m., where they will present a new case of the Ertzaintza officer, Carmen Arregui, about a murder committed in Burgos.

The fair will also have storytelling sessions from Tuesday to Thursday, with the aim of promoting the habit of reading from an early age and making it part of our daily lives.

At the state level, reading rates have experienced a 7% increase since the start of the pandemic, reflecting the growing interest in literature and its maintenance is something positive for the literary world.
