The motorway closed near Paris after the discovery of cracks in the roadway on Friday led to major traffic jams in Île-de-France on Monday.

A very complicated morning on the Ile-de-France roads. The traffic information site Sytadin counted up to 380 kilometers of traffic jams in the region this Monday, April 22. An unusual level of traffic jams, above the average level for a Monday, which normally sees a peak at 310 kilometers of traffic jams shortly before 9 a.m.

The fault is partly due to the closure of the A13 between Vaucresson and Paris since Friday, following a ground movement and the discovery of cracks in the roadway. The highway is not expected to reopen before Wednesday, May 1 and only “if all conditions are met”indicated on Monday evening the Interdepartmental Directorate of Roads of Île-de-France (Dirif) at Figaroconfirming information from BFMTV.

“If the monitoring conclusions confirm a stabilization of the ground, the first work to repair the roadway and protect the hydraulic structure could be undertaken by the end of the week”specifies Dirif in a press release sent in the evening. “Under these conditions and subject to this reservation, the reopening of the A13 to traffic could take place from Wednesday May 1”continues the press release.

Moving the retaining wall

Faced with the risk of saturation of alternative routes, the president of the Île-de-France Regional Council, Valérie Pécresse, pleaded on Sunday on “free use of the A14” – possible load shedding route but paying in the area concerned – in order to “guarantee access to Paris for all during the works”decrying “the terrible struggle for the people of Ile-de-France and the Normans”. “It’s an element that we will examine, like others”said Patrice Vergriete, Minister of Transport, judging that this option did not, however, provide a response to the increase in traffic.

The Dirif agents continued their “reinforced surveillance” cracks during the weekend and will establish one “continuously” from Tuesday. “This diagnosis allowed us to confirm that the cracking of the roadway and the hydraulic structure located under the highway are the consequences of a movement of the retaining wall”indicates the press release published this Monday.

The A13 motorway connects Paris to Caen in Normandy via the south of Rouen. It is particularly used by Parisians wishing to go to the Normandy coast. The private company Sanef (Société des autoroutes du Nord et de l’Est de la France) operates this motorway, except between Paris and Orgeval (Yvelines), where the manager is the French State, represented by Dirif.
