ANALYSIS – The subject offers two images that the Turkish press likes to use: that of the West denounced as Islamophobic, and that of young Muslim women ordered, in the name of secularism, to change their outfit to return to their classroom.

In Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Turkey, the controversy over the abaya which shook up the French start of the school year did not escape the media, particularly the pro-government press. The subject offers two images that this press likes to use: that of the West (of France in particular) denounced as Islamophobic, and that of young Muslim women ordered, in the name of secularism, to change their outfit to return to their classroom .

The first performance is not unique to Turkey. The second evokes in this country memories of students who were forced to reveal themselves at the university gates.

In power for more than twenty years, Recep Tayyip Erdogan has lifted all the bans that the military and judges had imposed on the veil in the civil service and educational establishments.
