The reservoirs in the basin managed by the Duero Hydrographic Confederation (CHD) today have a dammed water reserve of 2,059.8 hm3, which represents 72% of their total capacity, a value that is ten percentage points less than last year. one year (82.3%) and fourteen below the average of the last decade (86.5%).

The scarcity of rainfall and temperature anomalies, exceptionally high for this time of year, have caused a greater demand for dammed water to meet the necessary supplies and irrigation.

This situation has caused a continuous decline since the beginning of April in the reserves of the basin’s reservoirs managed by the CHD, when their volume usually begins to drop throughout the month of May.

In the last week, the reservoirs of the basin have lost 43.6 hm3, highlighting the 10.3 hm3 of the Riaño reservoir, which meets the irrigation demands of almost 75,000 hectares, the largest area in the entire Duero basin, and the 6.6 hm3 of Santa Teresa, a reservoir that supplies the city of Salamanca and some 30,000 irrigated hectares.

The decrease is being progressive and continuous in all the reservoirs of the basin to meet all the irrigation demands, maintaining compliance with the ecological flow regime established by the Hydrological Plan.

Third driest April since 1951

The Agency, Bids and irrigators are working together to adapt to the current situation, in a year with an exceptional lack of rainfall to this date, with the third driest month of April in Castilla y León since 1951, according to Aemet data.

The CHD is holding periodic meetings with water users through the different exploitation Boards to achieve sustainable water management, especially with the Pisuerga and Bajo Duero systems, currently with restrictions.

On the other hand, and according to the last drought report as of April 30, all the systems in the basin remain normal in terms of the prolonged drought indicator, while the Pisuerga goes on alert and the Carrión and Cega go on pre-alert as soon as to scarcity, thus adding to Bajo Duero and Torío-Bernesga.

It is essential, constantly and especially in the context of the current meteorological circumstances, to make every effort to use the water resource as efficiently as possible.

The CHD continues to work and advocate for sustainable management so as not to lose a single drop of water in the context of current climate change.
