TRIBUNE – The rebound in air traffic has created strong tension on the entire aeronautical sector, which is activating several levers to reduce its cycle times, explain Stéphane Albernhe and Rémy Bonnery, from Archery Strategy Consulting.

After a drop in production rates by half during the Covid crisis, aircraft manufacturers have announced strong recovery in production rates. This particularly concerns medium-haul aircraft, which are benefiting from excellent commercial momentum and abundant order books. Airbus has thus announced that it is aiming for a record rate of 75 planes per month in 2025, 15 more than before the Covid crisis. This increase in pace pulls the whole of the aeronautical sector which, after having reduced its format, must hire, train and reinvest. For long-haul aircraft, the challenges lie mainly in the ability to reduce production cycle times, the time between the airline’s order and the delivery of the first aircraft. Cabin customization being a factor of differentiation, but also a factor of complexity for the aircraft manufacturer and its subcontractors, the compression of this cycle time is a determining factor in convincing the airlines.
