The first similar event was organized in Hódmezővásárhely in connection with the 2014 annual general meeting of the European association in Hungary, because the headquarters of the Aikido Association Hungary is located there – recalled Imre Márton, president of the organization. The goal was that practitioners and admirers of the martial arts of Far Eastern origin could not only participate in training sessions, but also gain useful theoretical knowledge. The second conference was already held in Mako, and all the others since then

– already the eighth on Saturday.

Olympic and world champion fencer György Nébald, vice-president of the National Defense Sports Association, praised the importance of combat sports before his opening speech to Délmagyarország. He said that it is important that young people fall in love with sport, that it becomes their way of life and that they practice it for a lifetime. “The goal is for them to be able to do something for themselves, their immediate environment, their family, and if necessary, for their country,” he said. Aikido, fencing, but also any other sport that requires endurance and stamina is suitable for this.

By the way, aikido appeared in Hungary in the second half of the 1970s, and is currently practiced by around 25,000 people. The fact that the conference has been held in Mako for several years is due to the fact that Imre Márton, one of the domesticators of aikido in Hungary, lives in the city and does a great job in the association. During the day, the participants of the conference could listen to lectures from experts on Japanese culture, the legal assessment of self-defense, spinal protection, and the history of martial arts.

Sports centers are being built

– The government has a decision to build national defense sports centers in 16 district centers. Some of these are already standing – said György Nébald. Note: one of these has been designated in Makó, along Rákosi út, but the work has not yet started, the investment is currently in the public procurement phase. The vice-president of the National Defense Sports Association said about them that they have a shooting range and a fighting area suitable for placing tatami mats, i.e. they are also an opportunity for combat sports. The goal for the future was to have at least one such complex in every county.
