Summer heats up in the air sector. The unions threaten a General strike in protest against abusive minimum services which, as they denounce, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) systematically decrees every time they call mobilizations and which, as they understand, prevents them from exercising their fundamental right to strike. The announcement has been made Javier Fernández-Picazo, general secretary of the majority union of pilots, Sepla; that he has ensured that the discomfort over this issue is widespread in the sector and that there have already been contacts between the union organizations of the different groups to call the protests.

Fernández-Picazo has denounced that, despite the fact that in recent years up to fourteen sentences of the National Court have agreed with them and have declared null and void the minimum services that the Mitma had previously declared, the ministry “has continued to publish minimum services Similar”. Given this, Sepla has chosen to request the National Court precautionary measures to immediately cancel the minimum services that affect almost 90% of the flights in the indefinite strike that Air Nostrum pilots are currently maintaining. A path that will very probably follow in the case of the eight days of mobilizations called at Air Europa by its pilots for the days May 22, 23, 25, 26, 29 and 30 and June 1 and 2which are feared will also very likely be subjected to similar minimum services.

As reported by Manuel Reyes, Sepla’s representative at Air Nostrum, what these types of minimal services do is “chronify conflicts”. Reyes explained that, being so high, in his case, IAG manages to relocate all the passengers affected by the strike, which thus has no effect, with which the airlines “do not feel pressured to negotiate” their claims, which that violates their fundamental right to strike and chronicles conflicts to the detriment of travelers those who want to benefit “because they don’t know if they will be able to fly or not”. Both Air Nostrum and Air Europa pilots are demanding an update of the CPI after eleven years with frozen salaries in the case of the first and minimal updates in the case of the second.

In the end, Reyes has summarized, what happens is that, in his case, the only ones who lose when they call a strike are thembecause they stop earning part of their salary while for the companies there is no economic impact and passengers continue to fly.

Sepla assures that its discomfort with the minimum services is shared by other groups in the sector such as controllers, maintenance technicians and cabin crew (TCP). Therefore, his intention is bring together the entire aviation sector and promote protests in the summer to denounce the situation. Although union sources add that their intention is add if possible to unions of other groups of other means of transport since, as reported, they also suffer from the same problem.

From Sepla, however, They have reached out to the ministry to prevent the malaise from reaching greater. “We want to give the ministry the ability to reconsider, to see that what we are asking for is fair and that air transport workers have the right to strike,” explained Fernández-Picazo. “We understand that connectivity and the tourism sector are essential and that we are responsible when it comes to maintaining it. But we ask that we be heard, that Mitma reconsider, and we do not want to get ahead of ourselves,” he added.
