Increase in Daytime Thefts Raises Alarm in Israel

The rise in thefts in Israel has led to a concerning shift in criminal activity, as thieves are now choosing to strike during daylight hours instead of under the cover of darkness. According to recent reports, approximately 50% of thefts are now taking place during the day, a stark contrast to just a few percentage points in the past.

One sector that has experienced an alarming surge in theft is the automotive industry. Astonishingly, there has been a staggering 400% increase in vehicle thefts from 2022 production year vehicles compared to the previous year. This skyrocketing trend is even more pronounced when compared to the 127% rise in thefts from 2021 models and the 95% increase from 2020 models.

Concerns have also arisen regarding the destinations of these stolen vehicles. Recent data shows that the main locations where cars stolen from Israel end up are Tulkarm, Qalqilya, Ramallah, and Hebron. Additionally, estimates indicate that there are approximately 35 car slaughterhouses operating in Palestinian Authority territories, specifically in Tulkarm, Qalqilya, Ramallah, Hebron, and even in Jenin for the first time.

Analyzing the methods used by car thieves reveals some startling statistics. Shockingly, one in over one hundred cars is stolen when the vehicle’s owner either leaves the key inside or exits the car without proper precautions. In 6% of cases, thieves resort to towing or loading stolen vehicles onto tractors. Furthermore, 11% of thefts occur when the thief possesses a duplicate key, often procured through unauthorized means such as garage duplications. It is also noteworthy that 18% of theft attempts involve violent break-ins at the driver’s residence to steal the car key, while a staggering 64% of thefts are carried out through the use of OBD sockets to bypass anti-theft protection systems.

The increase in daytime thefts and the unprecedented figures of stolen vehicles have raised concerns among law enforcement agencies and vehicle owners alike. Authorities are now urging individuals to be more vigilant and take appropriate measures to prevent theft, such as never leaving keys inside unattended vehicles and ensuring that adequate security measures are in place.

As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for both the public and law enforcement to remain proactive in combating this alarming surge in thefts. Increased awareness, stricter security protocols, and collaborative efforts will be key in curbing this growing threat and restoring peace of mind for vehicle owners across the country.
