No unrolled banners, no chanting slogans. Throughout the duration of the Cannes Film Festival. From May 16 to 27, a large part of the city center will be affected by a decree “prohibiting demonstrations on public roads”. A measure justified by “the need to guarantee public order on the occasion of this event of exceptional scale of an international nature”, develops the text signed Thursday by the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes Bernard Gonzalez.

State services indicate to 20 Minutes that this decision is “not related to the current social situation”, confirming statements published by France 3 Côte d’Azur. “This is a decree taken each year,” adds a spokesperson.

Threats of power cuts

The mobilization against the pension reform was nevertheless well integrated into the authorities’ security equation. Questioned by AFP, Jean-Claude Geney, sub-prefect of Grasse, in charge of coordinating the system, explained at the start of the week that “particular attention will be paid to possible gatherings of people”. The State representative also said he was aware that “we may have additional sources of work compared to last year”.

CGT Energie has already threatened the event with giant power cuts. The union warned that “The Cannes Film Festival” like “the Monaco Grand Prix, the Roland-Garros tournament, the Avignon festival could end up in the dark”.
