In its statutes, Formula 1 is a mixed championship that can accommodate men and women on the track. But in reality, the reality is quite different. In seventy-two years of existence, the Formula 1 World Championship has seen 885 drivers, only 6 being female, with very often short-lived appearances. If the doors of the paddock are starting to open for positions of high managerial responsibility within certain teams (Monisha Kaltenborn was promoted to team manager at Sauber between 2012 and 2017 and Claire Williams from the eponymous team between 2013 and 2020), the grid of the queen discipline remains, it, therefore massively inflated with testosterone.
The paddock is a space paved with good intentions on the accession of women to steering wheels. Leaders and stars of the discipline, like Lewis Hamilton, have repeatedly encouraged their arrival at the highest level. But behind the declarations agreed in front of the cameras, the acts are still too rare…
