The Ambassador of Romania in Moscow Christian Istrate laid flowers on the Solovetsky Stone in Moscow as a sign of mourning for the unexpected and shocking death of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the Romanian Foreign Ministry announced today in a post on the Ex platform (formerly Twitter), Agerpress agency reported .

“Our thoughts go out to his family and to all the people in Russia who hope for democracy, freedom and dignity,” the Romanian Foreign Ministry said in the publication.

Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny died on Friday (February 16th) aged 47 in a penal colony in the Arctic, where he was serving a 19-year sentence.

On Sunday, people gathered in front of the Russian embassy in Bucharest to pay their last respects to Navalny, BTA reported.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said he was deeply saddened by the death of the Russian opposition figure, whom he called “a brave fighter for freedom and rights”. Iohannis called on the Russian Federation for a “transparent and comprehensive investigation” into the case.

Romanian Foreign Minister Luminica Odobescu said yesterday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his regime are responsible for the death of Alexei Navalny.
