The Israeli Andalusian Orchestra Ashdod held a series of “Little Concert in the Garden” sessions this weekend as part of the program for teaching the piyyut in the gardens: “Come to the Gardens”.

The Andalusian Orchestra is among the pioneers of the project, which takes place in collaboration and under the supervision of the Ministry of Education.

Kindergarten in Ashdod and the staff – Inbar Cohen, Shira Hadad, Orly Etadegi – cordially hosted a respected delegation from the Ministry of Education who were interested in how the children learned to sing piyyutim from the various Israeli communities: Michal Janko supervises music in the southern district, Keren Seroussi supervises kindergartens in the southern district, Moran Timur coordinates District kindergartens and Dorit Tenenbaum supervises the kindergartens of the city of Ashdod.

The orchestra players gave a session in which they played and sang with the children and presented a selection of fascinating musical instruments: kamanja, oud, darbuka, nai, and guitar.

Iris Khalifa, director of the education department of the Andalusian Orchestra, excitedly recounted how children from all over the country sing piyyutim and it sounds to them like the most natural soundtrack in the world. The city of Ashdod plays a significant role in bringing the gospel to the whole country.

Iris adds and notes that the children of Ashdod know the piyyutim well, also thanks to the efforts and dedication of a unique music teacher – Tzahala Melamed.

Esther Hatav, the national supervisor of the Khamad kindergartens, who was among the initiators and founders of the program, sent congratulations to the children and the dedicated staff.

There is no doubt that this type of success is the result of the cooperation of many forces in the city, and these days the director of education in Ashdod is working hard to receive an education award. Martin Ovadia, director of the city’s kindergarten department, hints that the “Come to Kindergarten” program with the Andalusian Orchestra will also be part of it. We will wait patiently.
