Arms crossed at the wrist, hands outstretched… This is the new anti-racist gesture adopted by FIFA on the occasion of its 74th congress held in Bangkok on 30 August.
To prevent racism so far, FIFA has provided in its Law 5 a three-step procedure that allows the referee to successively 1) stop, 2) temporarily stop and 3) permanently stop a match in case of racial discrimination .
When faced with any racist incident, players will now be able to use the anti-racist gesture and alert the referees, so they can activate the three-step procedure.
In France, the LFP has aligned itself with FIFA recommendations. The referee, players and match officials are now invited to make this anti-racist gesture to report an incident, either because they have noticed it or because it has been reported to them.
This new protocol, sent to the clubs in mid-September, was integrated into the anti-discrimination workshops carried out by the LFP, in collaboration with Licra, Foot Ensemble, the Foundation for Inclusive Sport and the UNFP.
Three workshops were therefore held at FC Metz on Thursday, aimed at professional players, top management and fans. For the first time, former player and coach Olivier Rouyer, the only actor in French professional football to come out after his career, was present together with Yoann Lemaire, founding president of the Foot Ensemble, and Marie Lobidel, head of training at Licra .
Since 2021, the LFP has organized 93 workshops in 33 professional clubs. In the form of role-playing games and debates, these workshops aim to raise awareness of all club stakeholders on issues and situations related to the fight against racism, anti-Semitism and homophobia in football.
