The Arab League highlights the importance of concerted efforts to combat drought and desertification

Cairo – The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States called on member countries to combine their efforts to address the phenomena of drought and desertification in the region.

In a statement issued on the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (June 17), the SG of the Arab League noted that this year’s celebration coincides with the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the fight against desertification, an international treaty focused on land management and drought, one of the three Rio conventions concerning biodiversity, climate change and desertification.

While this day is placed this year under the theme “United for the Earth: Our Heritage, Our Future”, the SG insists on the importance of mobilizing all layers of society to support sustainable land management, especially more than Arab countries are among the most ecologically fragile regions in the world, with 90% of their area classified as arid and extremely arid.

Officially proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994, the celebration of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought aims to raise public awareness of the issues related to desertification, land degradation and drought, to put forward human-implemented solutions to prevent desertification and reverse the trend towards intensification of drought, and to strengthen the implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
