Against the rector of the Smolensk State University of Sports, Georgy Grets, another criminal case was initiated – under Part 1 of Art. 285 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (abuse of office). This is stated in a statement by the regional department of the Investigative Committee.
According to the investigation, with the permission of Grets, unidentified persons from September 2019 to December 16, 2021 used a container with equipment for mining cryptocurrencies located on a land plot owned by the university. The equipment was powered by a federal-owned gas generator boiler house. The electricity bill from the activities of miners exceeded 4.2 million rubles, according to the department. The investigation believes that Gretz acted “out of selfish and other personal interest.” The Investigative Committee added that the investigators are establishing other episodes of Grets’ criminal activities, the FSB officers are conducting operational support.
Gretz was detained on December 15 on suspicion of misappropriation and embezzlement of university funds (part 4 of article 160 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). On December 17, he was sent to a pre-trial detention center. The rector is accused of embezzling more than 1.5 million rubles. together with the director of one of the structural divisions of the university from June 2020 to June 2021.
According to the Investigative Committee, about 800,000 rubles. illegally got into the accounts of a company affiliated with the defendants for actually unfulfilled repair work. The firm also received 600,000 rubles. for the installation of plumbing in the rector’s country house, another 150,000 rubles. Gretz spent on running water in his country house, the UK said.
