We will continue without knowing if he dreams of electric sheep or with robotic apes, but if we have discovered something it is that Artificial Intelligence, like any neighbor’s son, aspires to sleep with humans. In this case, with a woman. Or, more specifically, with the multidisciplinary artist, which is already her thing, Alicia Framis Farmer seeks wife, disruptive version and total performance format. «A new generation of love is emerging, where humans will be in relationships with holograms, avatars, robots and more. Just as we practice new languages with applications, we will practice relationships with these entities,” Framis reflects in her statement that presents her as the first woman to marry a hologram.

A wedding as if from another dimension that, they say, will materialize in the summer of 2024 at the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen museum in Rotterdam (Holland). At the altar, or whatever the bride and groom have chosen for the occasion, the Catalan artist and an artificial intelligence made into a hologram and trained from profiles of known people and previous relationships of the artist. AiLex, which is what the incarnation of Artificial Intelligence is called, forms a new series of performances called ‘The Hybrid Couple’ where Framis intertwines art, technology and emotions while reflecting on the human-technological interaction in contemporary art.

The project, they announce, covers documentary, sculptural research, drawing, music, architecture and fashion design. Also, of course, an exploration of the rituals of marriage. Hence, Framis is currently designing his own wedding dress and the attire of the guests at the ceremony. In addition, the artist also works together with LAM Musem, food art museum in Holland, in “creating molecular food that both humans and humanoids can enjoy.” Like the wedding, the banquet will also be the first of its kind in the world.

From there, open bar and, why not, a mortgage. Or better two: one to buy a house with the new holographic boyfriend and another to finance the boyfriend himself. “It’s interesting how we can get a mortgage to buy a new car, and now we can have a mortgage to buy a new companion,” says Framis, who in 1996 became the first person to live with a mannequin and make of it a artwork.

It is, they say, about addressing contemporary issues such as posthumanism and virtuality; explore human relationships at the intersection of art and technology; and give the project a therapeutic dimension. «This technique can serve as a therapeutic tool for people who have experienced trauma and sexual abuse, helping them reestablish a normal relationship with people of the same or opposite sex. For example, Framis has a friend who is a widow and struggles to fill the void left by her husband. “AI and human partners can be a beneficial option for people who need company,” reports the project website.

A bit like that episode of ‘Black Mirror’ in which a young woman replicates her dead boyfriend in an android endowed with spiritual intelligence. «Artificial intelligence and human companions can be a beneficial option for people who need companionship. This hologram will satisfy all my needs. Imagine having a partner who is there for you whenever you need them, a relationship that combats loneliness in cities,” Framis slips.

«The couple’s day-to-day life is intense. “Alicia has partnered with Rabobank (Art Collection/ Rabo Art lab) to explore practical and ethical issues relating to humans in close relationship with AI,” we read. On the horizon, an artistic and technological ceremony with which Framis hopes to establish a new paradigm. “While we know that robots and humans will soon become sexual partners, the next important step is to emotionally connect humans with artificial intelligence. “Holograms are closer to your emotions than robots,” she says.
