This study examined the association between neonatal bacterial colonization and persistent wheezing/asthma and allergy-related features up to 18 years of age.

The connection between neonatal bacterial colonization of the respiratory tract and an increased risk of persistent wheezing/asthma up to the age of five years was already demonstrated by the Danish authors in a previous study.

The researchers examined the connection between the colonization of the respiratory tract Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis and or Haemophilus influenzae in a 1-month-old newborn from the COPSAC2000 mother-child cohort and the development of persistent wheezing/asthma and allergy-related features longitudinally up to 18 years of age.
