The Attorney General’s Office began a preliminary investigation against Ricardo Roa, president of Ecopetrol, for his absences in the political control debates convened by the Congress of the Republic.
The investigation responds to complaints presented by several senators of the Fifth Commission Constitutional Court, who maintain that Roa’s lack of responses on issues of high relevance to the company and the country constitute a possible disciplinary offense.
Among the senators who expressed their disagreement are José David Name Cardozo, Marcos Daniel Pineda García and Didier Lobo Chinchilla, who on multiple occasions summoned Roa to discuss the financial situation of Ecopetrol, including the significant drop in its profits, the import of gas from the United States, and recent investment decisions in businesses outside Colombia.

Senator Name, a member of the La U Party, expressed his annoyance by pointing out that Roa has ignored the Fifth Commission’s summons for the second time. In his statements, Name did not hesitate to describe this attitude as a slight, both towards Congress and towards Colombian citizens. “He has no way to explain […] that the stock has dropped 49% since the day he arrived at the company,” said Name, referring to an audit carried out by Control Risks. This report revealed a worrying drop in the company’s profits in the last two years and warned of high financial risk.
The Attorney General’s Office seeks to clarify whether Roa’s conduct, by not attending the calls of Congress, constitutes a failure in the exercise of his functions. as leader of the country’s main oil company. In this sense, the Public Ministry asked the Fifth Commission for a detailed report on the number of times that the president of Ecopetrol ignored the calls, in order to advance the disciplinary process.
