The National Assembly’s Oversight Committee has approved the request for impeachment against Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld with five votes in favor, one against and three abstentions. This procedure marks the beginning of the impeachment process against the chancellor.
The assembly members who voted in favor of the request were Pamela Aguirre, Sofía Espín, Ronal González, all from the Citizen Revolution (RC) movement, as well as Lenin Barreto from the Independent Citizenship Challenge (RCI) movement and Lenin Rogel from the Social Christian Party (PSC).
On the other hand, legislators Pamela Zambrano, Adriana García of the Gente Buena movement and Ramiro Vela of the Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN) movement opted to abstain. César Umajinga, also of the ADN movement, was the only vote against the request.
The impeachment process against Chancellor Sommerfeld will follow the procedures set by the National Assembly, with hearings and presentation of evidence expected in the coming weeks.
