A calf is the first patient of the nonprofit Marine Mammal Stranding Center in New Jersey in the seal season that has just begun, the organization’s social media page reported. The center received a report on Christmas Day of a badly injured seal lying on the beach at Surf City on Long Beach Island.
When the specialists arrived, they found a male calf seal. The specimen had a large wound on its left hip, and other minor injuries around its belly and tail.
The more than one-year-old seal, believed to have been born last spring, was immediately transported to the MMSC for treatment and care. Upon arrival, staff gave him fluids and flushed his wounds.
During the veterinary examination, it was determined that the wound was probably a shark bite.
In order to prevent infection, they started medication. The young individual, which weighed 26 kilograms at the time of admission, is currently being cared for in the intensive care unit of the center.
