The Barcelona Tram has implemented in all its trams a system for monitoring the state of the driving staff capable of detecting if the person driving suffers from any alteration that, if not detected in time, could cause an accident.
(10/03/2023) The new tool works through a facial recognition system. A camera installed in the driver’s cab is capable of detecting driver fatigue or distractions while working and issuing a visual warning, through a small screen, and an audible warning to draw the worker’s attention. Likewise, the system sends information to the Control Center and, if deemed necessary from there, an operator contacts the cabin to find out if the driver is okay or if he needs a replacement.
The project was launched in 2022 with a pilot test of almost a year, within the framework of Tram’s Continuous Safety Improvement Plan. As a result of the success, the driving personnel monitoring system has been implemented in the 41 trams of the fleet, making Tram the first railway system in the European Union to have this technology.
