The Basque Country intends to remain at the forefront of the Spanish communities in its social policies and yesterday approved a new law that raises up to 1,031 euros the minimum pensions that will be received by Basque retirees who request to complement the State benefit.

Currently, 12,000 Basque retirees already have an increase in their monthly income guaranteed thanks to the Income Guarantee Income (RGI), but the new regulations soften the requirements and raise the minimum amounts. The Basque RGI also ensures an income of 800 euros for 18-year-olds who are unemployed, do not study and have become independent.

It is a daring law, daring to face a new deep and radical economic revolution, in which we do not want there to be losers, emphasized yesterday the socialist vice-elehendakari Idoia Mountain minutes before the PNV, the PSOE and Podemos approved the regulation that is part of a profound remodeling of the Basque subsidiary system.

The new law of the RGI is complemented by an Employment law that the Government led by Iigo Urkullu intends to approve in the first quarter of 2023. It will also undertake a reform of the Basque Employment Service after verifying its difficulties in coordinating the payment of social benefits with the training and employability of the unemployed.

The law that regulates social assistance in the Basque Country will formally enter into force starting next April 1st with an increase in the amount of minimum pensions that the Basque Government complements.

The Basque Country leads the average contributory pensions (1,542 euros) and non-contributory pensions (1,356 euros) with differences of more than 500 euros compared to Extremadura or Andalusia (with an average of just over 1,100 euros in contributory pensions). The new regulations intend to pull their pensions lower -almost 200,000 seniors- relaxing requirements such as the possession of a second home and extending the declared savings to almost 50,000 euros.

Only 16% of the Basque population is at risk of poverty and social exclusion (AROPE index) compared to 43% in Ceuta or 38.7% in Extremadura and Andalusia, but the Basque Government has also increased social assistance for families without resources with up to 1,680 euros per month which can be increased by another 250 euros for rent.

In addition, and for the first time after the agreement reached with Podemos, Euskadi has lowered the minimum age to 18 years to be able to receive a monthly aid of 800 euros when these young people have become independent and do not have their own resources.

A novelty criticized by the Basque PP that, together with Vox, voted against the approval of this regulation due to the fear that the model used in the granting of aid would make the almost 37,000 Basques who currently receive it chronic. Social assistance is not limited in time and is reviewed every 2 years.
