The most crucial stage of the immigration bill opens Monday, December 11, with its examination in public session at the National Assembly. For two weeks, the deputies are called to debate in the Hemicycle on the text brought by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, which aims to accelerate the procedures for examining asylum requests, to facilitate the expulsions of foreigners deemed dangerous or to simplify the regularization of undocumented workers in professions in shortage. Nearly 26,000 amendments were tabled.

The tenant of Place Beauvau, who made this text his political battle, managed to obtain a favorable vote from the Senate at the beginning of November, then in the law committee of the Assembly, on December 2. Parliamentary victories won at the cost of numerous accommodations which weakened the coherence of the bill, notably toughened in the hope of an agreement with the right.

For several weeks, Mr. Darmanin has tightened his communication on the provisions relating to the removal of foreigners deemed dangerous, with the lifting of protections benefiting in particular those who arrived in France before the age of 13 or who have resided in France for more than of twenty years, or 4,000 additional foreigners per year who can be deported according to Beauvau.

A direct response to the murder of a professor by an Islamist terrorist from the Caucasus that occurred in Arras on October 13. If its text had already been voted on, it would have made it possible to expel the terrorist, who arrived on French soil before he was 13, the minister repeated after the events. A questionable statement.

LR leaders ready to obstruct

“Gérald Darmanin plays the sorcerer’s apprentice in a weakened democracy, in a fractured country. With him, the government has made this debate on immigration possible without barriers. castigates the leader of the socialist deputies, Boris Vallaud, while the left struggles to be heard on the migration issue. For her part, the president of the National Rally (RN) group in the Assembly, Marine Le Pen, boasted on CNews on Sunday that her party was now “the center of gravity of political ideas in France”.

In this context, excitement is gaining on the executive which is still not sure of having the necessary number of votes to have its bill adopted. On the left, right and far right, the government’s text remains widely criticized. Even the support of the 21 deputies of the Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories (LIOT) group “is clearly not acquired”, warns Christophe Naegelen, elected LIOT des Vosges.
