BOLZANO. “The farmers’ protest is legitimate.” This is stated by South Tyrolean Farmers’ Association, the South Tyrolean Farmers’ Union, which, however, “distances itself from the protests that refuse the legitimation of democratic representation”. In a note, the Bauernbund “expresses its opinion solidarity with the demonstratorsas the problems of local agriculture are similar, if not directly comparable”.

“Many farmers fear for their livelihoods as their income has dropped dramatically due to the increase in input prices and no longer covers production costs – he explains Leo Tiefenthalerpresident of the Farmers’ Union – Furthermore, there are always new regulations e.gmore and more bureaucracy, especially on the part of Brussels. Last but not least, farmers complain about the lack of recognition for their services, such as food production or cultural landscape conservation.”

The Bauernbund also mentions “the impotence of farmers in the face of large predators such as wolves and bears” which “is also a cause of resentment in Alto Adige, as well as in Germany and France”.

“In a few days, South Tyrolean farmers will also take to the streets. We have to ask ourselves whether the time and place were chosen well. Bolzano is not the main cause of the problems, but Rome and Brusselswho are responsible for much of the bureaucracy. Protests must be organized there“, concludes the note.
