As of today, this new edition of what is considered a reference work in the lexicography of Spanish is now available, a dictionary that the academic Manuel Seco designed at the end of the sixties of the last century and which is the first dictionary that offers a systematic lexical inventory and rigorous analysis of the language, as well as information on the grammatical functioning of each word with real examples of use.

So in this third edition, as reported by the BBVA Foundation, the dictionary records the lexicon documented in Spain during the last seventy-three years (since 1950), more than eighty-three thousand slogans collected in a corpus of about three thousand books. and five hundred periodicals.

Specifically, the BBVA Foundation, which publishes this digital version on its website (www.fbbva.es/diccionario), is a version that “modernizes and extends” the previous one with more than 8,000 lemmas and in which the user is offered several layers of consultation: a simple visualization, with the definition and main meanings of use of the lemma, typical of dictionaries usual, and an advanced visualization, which provides information on the grammatical functions of the different elements of the definition and the texts on which it is based.

For example, and according to statements by the RAE academic Pedro Álvarez de Miranda, one of the characteristics of this renewal is that slogans marked as weird today they correspond to words that have almost fallen into disuse, but were widely used in the second half of the 20th century.

It is the case of the word yesthat for Álvarez de Miranda “it is more interesting to collect it with that less used brand than to eliminate it.”

This update has been possible, according to the BBVA Foundation, thanks to the heirs of Manuel Seco, as well as the lexicographer Olimpia Andrés and Gabino Ramos, who have taken care of the documentation tasks to continue the work started by Manuel Seco.

The BBVA Foundation, as publisher of the third edition of the DEAfirst in the digital space, will collaborate “closely” with the authors for the continuous updating of the dictionary, carrying out all the improvements that are necessary or advisable to facilitate access and use by the interested public.
