At the beach, it’s impossible to forget your bath towel. A cult object, it has been able to adapt to each era.
The instructions are universal: lie down on it to bask in the sun. Installing your towel properly, however, is a question of know-how that differs according to each person. It was in 1871, in a factory of the Jalla company, that the first terry towel was invented, due to a weaving error. A badly pulled thread made a loop, and finally the towel turned out to be much more absorbent. Bathing becomes a leisure activity in the 21st century, and tanning is fashionable.
Towels in all shapes
Subsequently, the towel invades the beaches, in all colors and all shapes. In recent years, a towel has dethroned all the others: the fouta. Imported from Tunisia, it is made of microfibers. “It doesn’t catch the sand, it dries much faster than a beach towel, you can use it as a pareo, it’s very practical”, explains a saleswoman. There are also XXL towels to accommodate friends, or others who let the sand through.
