With a very strong start to the match, the Springboks took the lead thanks to a try from Pollard. After two disallowed tries, South Africa was rewarded. But the Welsh reacted immediately and Reffell came to score a try on the only Welsh highlight to revive his team.
At the very end of the first period, Mbonambie increased the gap and sent his team back to the locker room with a 9-point advantage.
The Welsh were guilty of 9 fouls and were not penalized by Mr Carley.
