The Beauty Review: Body Horror TV Show – Delicious & Disturbing

by Sofia Alvarez

LOS ANGELES, March 8, 2024 – A new series from Ryan Murphy tackles unrealistic beauty standards and Ozempic culture with a darkly comedic twist, offering a striking departure from his most recent offering, All’s Fair, which received a rare zero rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A Return to Form for Murphy?

The beauty, an 11-part series now streaming, marks a return to the anthology style that defined some of Murphy’s earlier successes, like The People v. O.J. Simpson and Feud. The show, based on the comic book by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, centers around a sexually transmitted disease that bestows spectacular beauty upon its victims before a gruesome death.

Investigating the Epidemic

FBI detectives Jordan Bennett (Rebecca Hall) and Cooper Madsen (Evan Peters),who are also navigating a intricate romantic relationship, are tasked with investigating the outbreak. Jordan’s recent breast implants, a response to childhood bullying (“The Itty-Bitty Titty Committee”), highlight the pervasive influence of beauty standards even on those in positions of power.

From Isolation to Change

The story also follows Jeremy, played by Jeremy Pope, a lonely man seeking purpose. After a camgirl disappears, he consults a doctor who diagnoses him as an “incel” and offers a solution: plastic surgery. “I can make you a Chad,” the doctor proposes, setting Jeremy on a path connected to the virus that promises aesthetic perfection.

A Billionaire’s Creation

The virus is revealed to be the creation of tech billionaire Byron Forst (Ashton Kutcher), known as the Corporation, who enlists the help of the Assassin (Anthony Ramos) to control the escalating chaos. The series doesn’t shy away from exploring the darker side of technological advancement and its impact on society.

A Delightful Return with Isabella Rossellini

Adding to the intrigue is Isabella Rossellini as Franny Forst, potentially related to Byron. The prospect of Rossellini and Kutcher sharing the screen is described as “flavorful,” promising a captivating dynamic.
