A Robotic Dog That Looks Like a Human
If this photo featured a dog instead of a robot, it wouldn’t stand out among the millions of photos of people with their pet dogs circulating online. But the fact that the pet in the photo is not a common robotic dog, at least for now, makes this image particularly disturbing. In this photo, the people are Mayooran Thavendra (left) and Kasthuri Jayarajah, both from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in the United States. They are part of an international team working to achieve a robotic dog that can dynamically adapt its behavior to the characteristics of the people it interacts with, and that ultimately looks much more like a living and conscious person than like a machine. Artificial intelligence is being used for the project.
