The best in the world in women’s doubles badminton stopped the flight of the Bulgarians Gabriela and Stefani Stoevi in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games in Paris. The leaders in the world rankings and current world champions Qingchen Chen and Yifan Jia beat the Stoevi sisters 2:0 (21:15, 21:8) at the Porte de la Chapelle arena and continued their march towards Olympic titles.
The Chinese women are silver medalists from the games in Tokyo. Asian women are a total of 4 times world champions – in 2017 and in the last three years (2021, 2022 and 2023). They won all three matches in the group.
From their third participation in the Olympic Games, Gabriela and Stefani Stoevi for the first time overcame the group phase and entered the top 8.
Only Asian couples remained in the top 4, and before that, apart from the Bulgarian women, only the representatives of Denmark, Fruegaard and Tugensen, made it into the top 8.
