A Ukrainian pilot was killed in battle while fighting against Russian forces, just days after he was highly honored for his bravery against the Russians, and received an award for it from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Major Anton Listopad, who was awarded the title of the best pilot of the Air Force of Ukraine in 2019, died in action. His death comes a few days after the pilot received from the President of Ukraine the prestigious award, the “Order of Courage” for “courage and professionalism”.

Listopad, a pilot of the 204th unit of Sevastopol, was buried on Monday next to his friend, Colonel Yuri Puhorili, in the village of Choklyvka, near the city of Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine. More than 100 relatives and Ukrainian soldiers gathered at the funeral to pay their respects, two fighter jets performed a flypast in honor of the last combat dead.

The flight school he studied at posted a Facebook post about the pilot. “Anton’s path behind the wheel of a fighter was difficult but meaningful, the young man stubbornly pursued his dream – to become a pilot, fly high in the sky like a bird, and contemplate the beauty of the earth. In 2019, Anton was recognized as the best pilot of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and was a participant in many operations in eastern Ukraine.”
