The Raíces de Europa festival (Roots of Europe International Film Festival) returns to Vitoria from May 8 to 12 with a selection of titles that will be screened on the big screen of Vital Fundazioa Kulturunea, on the first floor of Dendaraba. To this will be added different colloquia that will bring the viewer closer to what their creative process is like and the particular look of each author. In total, 16 shorts will compete in the official section that can be enjoyed during the first two days. From the organization they advance that it will be a “very varied” and “high quality” exhibition that includes animation, documentary, drama and comedy. The contest is further proof of the good reception that short-running and internationally-produced films have in Vitoria, since it takes over from the Icoff festival that was held just a week ago with a great reception.

This sixth edition of the program will also have the presence of the American producer and director Janek Ambros (1988, New Jersey) as guest of honor. One of his latest works, the short ‘Ukranians in Exile’, just 6 minutes long, has been praised for masterfully capturing the “cry for help” of the Ukrainians who have had to leave their homes after the invasion by the Russian troops. As Miguel Ángel Salazar, a member of the competition’s jury, points out, he is a renowned filmmaker in the sector who has collaborated with iconic figures such as producer Barbara De Fina and cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, a regular with Steven Spielberg. In Ambros’ filmography, ‘Imminent Threat’ stands out, a documentary denouncing the Trump era. He will participate in a colloquium on May 10 and, the next day, four short films signed by him will be shown (‘Magoado’, ‘May 15 in Paris’, ‘Son of man’ and ‘Ukrainians in exile’ ).

As an aperitif to the celebration of the sessions of short films in competition, next week there will be three free passes around ‘Cinema and art’; the screening of the film ‘Sen 1991’ by Matías Zemljic, director of the Raíces de Europa festival; and the documentary about Bingen Mendizabal, ‘Bidean Jarraituz’, directed by Aitor López de Aberásturi. From Raíces de Europa they assure that the cycle continues with its “tradition” of having films from a large number of countries, since more than 110 directors from different origins have participated in previous editions. “The objective of the festival is to promote, through cinema, integration”, they point out about an appointment that also considers how the seventh art can contribute to “peace and coexistence”.
