Taste of the sea means many things to us, even the wonderful face of Marina Suma on unforgettable melody and words. For this reason, while waiting for the restored release in theaters on August 29, we subscribe to the divisive Indiscreto Festival one of the big names that has remained out so far, Richard Cocciante. Whose musical history is so long that it is difficult to identify a golden age. We therefore rely two-thirds on streaming numbers and one-third on our tastes, as is the case for the other competitors. And in chronological order we start from 1974, when the twenty-eight year old Cocciante after a long apprenticeship breaks through with Beautiful without a soul.
Written by himself, Marco Luberti and Paolo Casella, Bella senz’anima is one of those songs-vents that have never had much success in Italy (in addition to Cocciante, Masini comes to mind, as a successful case) but which at the time was truly a breaking song, among other things highly criticized by feminists “Adesso nudati come sai fare tu” with Cocciante’s voice is not easily forgotten. After a series of memorable songs (Margherita, Io canto, Cervo a primavera, to name three that even the deaf know) the second of our vote comes in 1982: and it is precisely the Celeste nostalgia chosen by the Vanzinas. Written by Cocciante, with text by Mogol, it has no second levels of reading but only the first: the nostalgia for a lost love, which accompanies you throughout your life.
The Cocciante-Mogol duo hit the mark again in 1991, when the Italian-French singer, but very Italian in terms of musical formation, took part in the Sanremo Festival with If we are together. In an edition of extraordinary quality Cocciante wins ahead of Renato Zero (Backs to the wall), machine (Why do you do it?) and Umberto Tozzi (The others are us). It is his first and only participation in the Festival and also his last great success linked to his voice is in his face, because from then on he will find fortune at an international level as a musical author, especially Our Lady of Paris, and soundtracks.
