The better economic expectations trigger the creation of companies up to 2008 levels

The economy performed better than expected during the first quarter of the year, with growth of 0.6% compared to the previous quarter. For the second quarter there are still no official data, but different organizations point to a similar advance of between 0.5% and 0.6%. This improvement in economic expectations has led to the creation of companies soaring in the month of May by 14% compared to the figures of a year ago.

Specifically, 10,404 commercial companies were created in May, their highest figure this month since 2008, before the financial crisis broke out. The data published this Friday by the INE reveal that the creation of companies thus chains five consecutive months of promotions, being that of January the highest of those registered so far.

Of course, for the constitution of the more than 10,400 companies in May, 360 million euros were subscribed, 4% less than a year ago for a smaller number of companies. In addition, the average subscribed capital stood at 34,600 euros, 16% less than a year ago.

In the accumulated of the first five months of the year, a total of 50,000 companies have been created, 10% more than in the same period of 2022. And in monthly terms (May over April) the constitution of new companies shot up almost 21 %, the highest rate for seven months.

10,400 companies were created, but 1,700 were dissolved. Even so, it is a figure 1.6% lower than that of the same month last year. In this way, every day of May 55 companies were closed in Spain.

The highest rates occurred in the Balearic Islands (49% more than a year ago), Castilla-La Mancha (42%) and Aragón (41%). On the contrary, the greatest decreases were registered in Asturias (-60% with respect to the dissolutions of a year ago), Cantabria (-42%) and La Rioja (-35%).

At an accumulated level, in the first five months of the year the number of dissolved companies has increased by 0.9% up to May.

Basque Country in the lead

The communities that created the greatest number of companies last May were Madrid (2,216 companies), Catalonia (2,046) and Andalusia, where 2,029 companies were created. The regions that incorporated the fewest companies in the fifth month of the year were La Rioja (36), Navarra (75) and Cantabria (77).

Fifteen regions created more companies in May than in the same month of 2022, especially the Basque Country (34.1%), Andalusia (31.4%) and the Valencian Community (20.9%). Among the decreases, the most pronounced were recorded by Navarra (-10.7%) and Galicia (-3.2%).

Considering the dissolved commercial companies, the communities with the highest number of dissolutions in May 2023 were Madrid (495), Andalusia (293) and Catalonia (165). On the contrary, the autonomous communities with the fewest dissolved mercantile companies were Navarra (7), La Rioja (11) and Asturias (14).

Seven communities increased their number of business dissolutions last May in the interannual rate, mainly the Balearic Islands (+49.1%) and Castilla-La Mancha (+42.3%), and nine reduced them, especially Asturias (-60 %), Cantabria (-42.3%) and La Rioja (-35.3%).
