The Bidaideak BSR shines in the preliminary phase of the Champions League

The Bilbao club beat the Italian Amiccaci in Txurdinaga in the morning and the Turkish Galatasaray in the afternoon

The first day of the great wheelchair basketball festival took place this Friday at the Txurdinaga sports center, one of the three venues for the Champions League qualifying phase, the best European competition. And Bidaideak Bilbao BSR started in the dream way by beating Italian Amicacci 73-62 first and then Turkish Galatasaray, who started as favourite, 89-63 and 46 points from Giulio Papi. Bidaideak is the leader of the league and is thus very close to one of the two places that allow them to continue in the Champions League. This Saturday they face the Hornets Le Cannet from France (11.15 am) and close this phase against the English of the Manchester Revolution (6 pm).

From the early hours of the morning, the Bilbao sports venue was abuzz with players and coaches from the five teams in contention, as well as many fans. In the opening match between Bidaideak Bilbao BSR and Italian Amicacci Abruzzo, the stands were occupied, in a large majority, by people with functional disabilities who cheered on both teams, celebrating everyone’s baskets with enormous enthusiasm. Happiness was total with the triumph of the locals. Before the start of that first meeting, an aurresku took place with which the competition was inaugurated, with the presence of the mayor of Bilbao Juan Mari Aburto, the provincial deputy for Euskera, Culture and Sport, Lorea Bilbao, the sports adviser Carlos Sergio, or the councilor Itxaso Erroteta and Marcos Muro, director of Bilbao Kirolak.

Bidaideak found problems with the Italians from Amicacci until the break, when they arrived with a five-point lead (32-27) against a rival who had just won the Super Cup for their country. In the third quarter, the income of Adrián Yáñez’s men increased with a 18-14 run, which allowed them to appear in the final ten minutes with nine points of income against Giulianova’s men. With three minutes to go, with the game already more under control, the Bilbao club was placed with an almost definitive 70-53 that gave it the maximum advantage. The hosts heard the final honk with a favorable score of 73-62. Asier García was the top scorer with 23 points (in addition to 17 assists and 16 rebounds), to Giulio Papi and Txema Avendaño’s 12 points, James McSorley’s 10 and Adrián García’s 8. Glossner and Lorenzo had four. The squad was already looking forward to playing in the afternoon against the powerful Galatasaray, who in their first meeting beat the French Hornets Le Cannet 75-62.

It was noted that the players from Bilbao wanted revenge against a Turkish club that left them without the Euroleague title in 2018, when Galatasaray won on this same Txurdinaga court 71-73. Bidaideak was able to get even yesterday with a resounding victory by 26 points. At halftime they were beating a team that has won several Champions Leagues by 47-32. If in the clash against Amicacci it was Asier García who took responsibility for scoring, the Italian Giulio Papi took over in this decisive match and after the first two quarters he had already added 23 points (46 in total). Midway through the third quarter, the Turkish coach was forced to call a timeout when he observed the 61-39 score for Bidaideak in Txurdinaga’s electronic scoreboard. Adrián Yáñez’s men were thrown and never relaxed to win 89-63 and be the only ones to win in the first two games. Now they want to close this phase as leaders. “It’s not done yet. You have to try to win every game. Against the Turks we started very plugged in from the beginning. Galatasaray had always been bad at us and we have removed a thorn that we had been with for years, “said Txema Avendaño, author of 17 points, just after the second game.
