While construction is already underway on two other offshore wind projects approved by the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management – the Vineyard Wind 1 project off Massachusetts and the South Fork Wind project off Rhode Island and New York – Ocean Wind 1 stands out, being the largest among the three.
The Biden administration has expressed its commitment to developing 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland emphasized that Ocean Wind 1’s approval marks another milestone in their efforts to combat climate change, create good-paying union jobs, and secure a sustainable future for the nation.
However, despite the positive momentum, proposed wind projects along the East Coast still face significant opposition from Republican lawmakers and local residents. In Cape May County, where communities will have a direct view of the wind turbines from the shore, opposition has been particularly strong. Concerns have been raised about issues such as the potential impact on local tourism and the welfare of marine life, leading to legal challenges from activist groups like Protect Our Coast NJ.
To further compound challenges, Ocean Wind 1 has experienced setbacks due to rising interest rates and inflation. In response, the New Jersey legislature recently passed a bill allowing Orsted to retain federal tax credits to address economic hardships caused by inflation and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Notwithstanding these obstacles, Orsted remains optimistic about the project’s progress. With the approval from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, onshore construction for Ocean Wind 1 is scheduled to commence later this year, followed by offshore construction in 2024. Commercial operations are expected to begin in 2025.
