What comes after «Succession»? After the HBO series felt like it won every category in recent years, the carefully crafted literary adaptation «Shōgun» is now shining – with 18 awards, a record. The series definitely has the best kimonos. Here’s our overview of the most important winning series:

Best Drama Series: «Shōgun»

In 1600, a sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) arrives in Japan filthy and infested, but quickly rises to the advisor of a powerful lord and gets entangled in the struggle for power over Japan. Along the way, he falls in love with his translator. «Shōgun» is based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell and artfully plays with the question: Who is culturally superior, more civilized – and who is the barbarian? A major star is Anna Sawai as the highly educated, strategically gifted translator Mariko, who unfortunately comes from a discredited family. (SZ)

For years, comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) has been performing in a Las Vegas casino. However, her jokes resonate less and less with today’s more sensitive audience, and when she loses her residency, she needs to come up with something. Reluctantly, she is paired with young bisexual comedian Ava (Hannah Einbinder), who helps Deborah with writing jokes. «Hacks» is not a sentimental story of redemption but rather shows how tough the American humor business can be. A smart portrait of two women, both struggling to adapt, and unable to let go of each other, even if they often get on each other’s nerves. (blu)

2 seasons on Netflix. The third is not yet available.

Scot Richard Gadd has lived and written «Baby Reindeer» and now plays the struggling comedian Donny, who rarely performs on stage but stands behind the bar of a pub every day. He is seen in the second scene – a woman walks in, Martha (Jessica Gunning). She claims to be a successful lawyer but has no money to order anything. Donny is not surprised and treats her to a tea, and one wishes he were not so kind.

Martha isn’t. Martha starts appearing every day, and soon Donny finds out that she was indeed a lawyer but has a conviction due to a severe stalking case with dramatic outcomes. In «Baby Reindeer», not just one lead actor is excellently reenacting his own horror story with a stalker, and things get really crazy when Donny starts to ask himself why he hadn’t gone to the police earlier. The show’s connection to reality, its open self-reflection makes it a rare gem, irritating, shocking, painful, and at times wildly funny – you cheer along, share fears, and can’t stop watching. (SZ)

The new season of the acclaimed restaurant drama series feels like an interlude. Less stress – although, much still overflows, both literally and metaphorically – more quiet moments, where the backstory of a character is sometimes unraveled, and sometimes there’s time for an intimate scene. The impressive Jamie Lee Curtis makes another appearance as mother Donna and emotional time bomb. But this time, she shows a tender side in the episode with her pregnant daughter Natalie, nicknamed Sugar. Chef Carmy has completely shut himself off from his feelings and the disaster with his ex-girlfriend, burying himself in work. He’s tinkering with peas and making some mousse that his colleague Sydney dismisses with the words “cool, if it were 2014.” But the agnolotti looks very good. (blu)

Best Actress in a Limited Series: Jodie Foster in «True Detective: Night Country»

It’s getting dark. In Alaska, specifically, in Ennis. It feels remote and lonely here. Then the crew of the Tsalal Arctic research station disappears. All scientists vanish suddenly. “It’s cold, dark, and female,” described Issa López the continuation of «True Detective». The Mexican filmmaker wrote and directed the screenplay for «Night Country». López says she is into “dark, messed-up mystery”. And it really gets creepy.

Oscar-winner Jodie Foster takes the stage in her first lead role in a series: Liz Danvers is a tough, gritty police officer, personally a wreck but uncompromising and almost genius in her job. Kali Reis, a professional boxer in real life, plays Evangeline Navarro. The indigenous police officer is visually an ideal complement to Danvers: a head taller, broad-shouldered, and many tattoos. Also, she is an incredible tough cookie. Naturally, the dreariness in Ennis also affects the detectives. Thus, the personal issues of Danvers and Navarro create a far deeper perspective than just the criminal case. (SZ)
