The Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Triandopoulos, at the conclusion of the second reading of the bill, called on all parties to vote for it, as, as he said, “it strengthens both the structures and the employees of the General Secretariat of Climate Crisis and State Aid as well as the beneficiaries affected by natural disasters”.
He declared positive and indicated that he will examine with the co-competent Ministry of Finance the proposal to increase the amount of the prescribed fine from 5,000 euros to 10,000 euros for companies with an annual turnover of more than 2 million euros per year that will not carry out the obligation of private insurance for losses from natural disasters established.
It will also consider the addition to the Council of the Observatory of Private Insurance against natural disasters, which is established and a representative of the OTAs and the Federation of Intermediaries of Insurance Companies.
The Deputy Minister informed the Committee that the procedures are underway in order to have a single hub for state aid, where, as he noted, “on the one hand, the interoperability of services will be presented there, and on the other hand, there will be the possibility of the citizen with the codes that will has received information on the state of the compensation application he has filed and what steps he should take”.
Mr. Triandopoulos emphasized that with a special amendment that will come in the next few days, the problems regarding the content of the files and autopsies, which were presented by their transfer from the Ministry of Environment to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Citizen Protection, will be cured. , as, as he pointed out, “for us, the workers are our close partners and we want the autopsies to proceed and not have difficulties in their work”.
Regarding private insurance against natural disasters and state aid, the deputy minister clarified that “our goal is for them to go hand in hand”. He urged the insurance companies “not to have an approach based solely on market conditions but to take into account all economic and social parameters and necessities”. He stated, in fact, that “we will closely monitor these developments, which is why the relevant Observatory is being created”.
Mr. Triandopoulos reiterated that this bill is part of a legislative trilogy to complete, through adaptation to the new adverse climate crisis data, the institutional framework that governs support and restoration after a natural disaster. “This is a major reform when before there was a gap,” he concluded.
