The Minister in charge of Energy, Roberto Luque, recognized that the massive blackout on June 19 is due to the lack of investment in maintenance.

Roberto Luque, Minister in charge of Energy and Mines, explained this June 16 that the surprising blackout of this day is proof that Ecuador’s energy system ““It is in crisis.”

The specific cause of this blackout, which occurred around 3:00 p.m. and spread massively, is due to damage to the Milagro – Zhoray transmission line. This breakdown generated a ‘blackout’ that spread to the entire system.

The Minister recognized that this damage would have been avoided with a timely investment in maintenance. For Luque, the global problem is, precisely, the lack of investment in the different areas of the national energy system.

This includes maintenance, but also the structure and the transmission of electrical energy. “For years we have stopped investing in these systems and today we are experiencing the consequences,” he expressed in his X account.

Luque announced that 100% service would be achieved until 9:00 p.m. or 10:00 p.m. Guayas is the province that will ultimately recover the entire service.

The surprise massive power outage this Wednesday occurred two days after the Government ruled out the possibility of blackouts, as had been announced on Monday, after the Coca-Codo-Sinclair hydroelectric plant, the most important generator in the country, went out of operation. .

The system’s withdrawal of that plant was due to the danger that it could suffer damage due to the increase in the amount of sediment in the flows of the rivers that feed it, due to the intense rains.
