The remains of little Émile’s body were found on Saturday March 30, the Aix-en-Provence public prosecutor announced this Sunday in a press release. The bones of the child who disappeared on Saturday July 8, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, were recovered by investigators after the gendarmerie was informed of the discovery of the remains near the hamlet of Vernet.

The bones were immediately transported to the Criminal Research Institute of the National Gendarmerie in order to carry out genetic identification analyses. The latter made it possible “to conclude this Sunday that these were the bones of the child Émile Soleil”, specifies the press release.

« L’IRCGN [Institut de recherche criminelle de la gendarmerie nationale, NDLR] continues the forensic analyzes on the bones and the national gendarmerie is dedicated to deploying means to undertake additional research in the geographical area where they were found,” concludes the prosecutor.

A situation

Émile disappeared on July 8, 2023 while he was with his grandparents in their second home in Haut-Vernet, a hamlet located about thirty minutes from Digne-les-Bains (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) at 1,800 meters above sea level. Two neighbors claim to have seen him on the main street of the hamlet, but with conflicting accounts.

No lead had been put aside, even if the theory of a fatal fall had faded following the multiple futile searches organized in the surroundings of the hamlet. First opened for a worrying disappearance, the investigation was quickly entrusted to two investigating judges from Aix-en-Provence then reclassified as criminal grounds for “kidnapping” and “sequestration”.

A role-play, a sort of reconstruction of the facts, took place on Thursday March 28 in Haut-Vernet, with 17 people, including all the people present on the day of the child’s disappearance. However, the mystery remained unsolved after this act of investigation after which no information had filtered out.

The parents, particularly the father, were accused several times of being part of a sect and of being fundamentalist Catholics. His grandfather belonged to the Riaumont community. Until now, the two avenues retained by investigators were the accident or the kidnapping. A house in the hamlet was searched last October.
