On July 18, 1953, Francisco Franco was awarded the Laureate Gold Medal for Merit and Sacrifice at Work and 70 years later the BOE published its withdrawal in application of the Democratic Memory Law.
The Government also revokes the award of another 8 high-ranking officials of the dictatorship to former soldiers and ministers such as José Luis de Arrese, Juan Yagüe, José Antonio Girón, Jesús Romero Gorría, José Solís Ruiz, José María Fernández Ladreda (also former mayor of Oviedo) , Cardinal Enrique Plá y Deniel and the military and former mayor of Cádiz José León de Carranza.
From the Ministry of Labor it has been defended that “the facts incorporated into the file allow us to deduce that the distinguished citizen supported and actively collaborated with the forces that in July 1936 rose up against the democratic and constitutional regime of the Second Spanish Republic that led to the Civil War of 1936-1939”.
The Council of Ministers held last Tuesday approved the withdrawal of the Gold Medal and it was the vice president who appeared at a press conference to explain the measure, which appealed to the application of article 42 of the Democratic Memory Law.
“The only work that the people from whom we withdraw this merit have raised is having worked to violate and violate human rights and trample on democracy in our country,” said Díaz.
Regarding the rest of those affected, the vice president highlighted that Yagüe is known as the “butcher of Burgos”; Romero Gorría promoted the prohibition of strikes, violated the right to association and created the vertical union model; Arrese was general secretary of the Francoist Movement, or that Plá y Deniel was the “inducer and theoretician of the coup.
This decision was brought forward some time ago when the minister expressed her intention to strip Franco and the leaders of his regime of this distinction.
