The Bolsonaro-Lula duel electrifies Brazil

STORY – The official presidential campaign on October 2 began in a climate of “holy war”.

“We are facing a mentally unbalanced person.” During the first major public meeting of his campaign on Thursday evening, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva unleashed the heavy artillery against his main rival, outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro. Pacing a large stage, the left-wing ex-president regained his former ardor to harangue a crowd of supporters gathered in a large square in Belo Horizonte, capital of the key state of Minas Gerais, for the presidential election of 2 October of which he is the favourite.

The 76-year-old former trade unionist launched his seventh candidacy for the presidency of Brazil this week, which he led twice (2003-2010). But for him, this year, it is not a “normal” campaign where ideas clash. “What is at stake today is democracy against fascism, democracy or barbarism”he launched in a voice even more hoarse than before.
