The Lula government intends to regulate the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal purposes in Brazil and replace imports of these products, says the national secretary for Drug Policies and Asset Management of the Ministry of Justice, Marta Machado.

Currently, the planting of the plant is allowed only in case a favorable court decision is obtained. Last March, the Ministry of Justice had already manifested itself in a lawsuit in favor of the Superior Court of Justice authorizing crops in Brazil.

In its plea, the ministry says that it considers a broad and adequate regulation of the importation and cultivation of cannabis with low THC concentration (component that causes psychoactive effects) convenient, for industrial, pharmaceutical and medicinal purposes.

According to Marta Machado, authorizing cultivation will be one of the priorities of the National Drug Policy Council (Conad), a body made up of members of the Ministry of Health, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and the Federal Police.
