Calabria, Southern Italy, late 1960s. To pay her family’s debts, Maria sacrifices herself by agreeing to marry Vittorio Bassi,
a farmer from a northern town, abandoning her roots and her hopes of one day reuniting with the love of her life, Antonio.
However, Maria discovers that Vittorio is not her husband but her nephew, Italo who rejects her because he is still upset by the sudden departure of his wife Giorgia.
Maria’s days go by, between hard work in the fields, the hostility of the other workers, Vittorio who treats her like a servant, and the contempt of Italo.
The only ray of sunshine in Maria’s life is her relationship with Paolino, Italo’s son, who suffers from epilepsy, has been living in the stables since his mother left, and he doesn’t even go to school.

Meet the characters of the series “The Bride”:
Mary: Maria is a young woman from the South who, in order to earn a living for her family, agrees to a proxy marriage. She moves to Northern Italy to live with Italo, the man she married but he doesn’t know.
Despite her hard work in the fields, the hostility and rejection of her husband Italo, Maria does not give up. On the contrary, patient and strong as she is, she makes every effort to improve everyone’s life: at home first, starting with Paolino, Italo’s son from his first wife – and at work, fighting for workers women’s rights and calling for gender equality.
Italian: Orphaned as a child, Italo grew up with his uncle Vittorio. After the disappearance of his wife, Georgia, he lives in pain in the hope of finding her one day.
He is often drunk in the town bar, and people whisper that he is responsible for the disappearance of his first wife. When he finds out that his uncle married him without his knowledge, he becomes furious.
He is not interested in Maria, the young Southern woman he was forced to marry. However, over time, he softens and realizes how Maria takes care of everyone, especially his son Paolino.
Vittorio: Vittorio represents the power of tradition. He seems to care more about his land and possessions than people. To ensure that he will have descendants who will work in the fields and that the family name will be permanent, he marries his nephew Italo to Maria.
Vittorio treats Maria like a servant, but he slowly realizes how worthy she is. Still, he will find it hard to believe her.
Pauline: Paolino is Italo’s son from his first wife. He is a lovable and intelligent ten-year-old child suffering from epilepsy.
After his mother’s departure, he withdraws more and more into himself, sleeps in the stables, speaks little and does not go to school. Due to the arrival of Maria and her loving, motherly manner, he is back to the comfort of home and school.
Anthony: Antonio is Maria’s first love. Before he left for Belgium in search of his fortune, he asked her to stay with him, but he left himself.
When he returns, he is an ambitious contractor and decides to bring Giuseppe, Maria’s younger brother, into his business. He wants at all costs to win back Maria, who is now married, and will do everything in his power to achieve it.
Philomena: She is the mother of Maria, Luisa and Giuseppe. After her husband’s death, although she works hard, she cannot repay the family’s debts. And she cannot do anything against her daughter’s marriage to a stranger.
Giuseppe: Giuseppe is Maria’s younger brother. His sister’s marriage is a betrayal to him and her move. Maria tries to calm him down and pushes him to study, because that is the only way to achieve what he wants most. Antonio transfers him and takes him to his business, taking him with him to the North.
Verbena: Luisa is Maria’s younger sister and is engaged to Rocco. She is Uncle Michele’s first choice for a bride. Maria volunteers to take her place to protect her.
Carla: Carla is a humble farm worker with a great political mind. She is convinced that the world is changing and that women deserve gender equality. Maria’s friend and role model.
She is the one who goes with her to Paolino’s teacher to convince her to take the child’s exams to return to school and she is the first to talk to Maria about the rights of women and workers.
Uncle Michele and Carmela: Androgynous, and responsible for organizing the marriage of all the town’s girls to men from the north. Mary’s family has a lot of money for them and they don’t let a day go by without reminding them of the debt.
