Acute lower respiratory tract infection caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) contributes substantially to the burden of global mortality in childrenestimating that RSV causes one of every 50 deaths among children under five years of age, and one of every 28 deaths among children under six months.

97% of infant deaths caused by RSV occurred in low- and middle-income countries. The authors state that these results highlight the urgent need to develop effective RSV vaccines and strategies that prioritize the most vulnerable groups, such as children under six months, through passive immunization (i.e. vaccination during pregnancy)
