At the Left Bank Cinema Club, this Tuesday, at 8:00 p.m., Alexei Labanov’s film “The Brother” (1997) will be screened, which is considered the film that started the flourishing of the crime genre in Russia and reflected the capitalist chaos of the 1990s. Danila, a discharged Russian soldier, returns home from the war in Chechnya and discovers that no one is waiting for him in Russia. The only place that welcomes him with open arms is the world of crime.

After the viewing, Ekaterina Rivkin, lecturer and film researcher from Sapir College, will talk about the transition of the character of the patriotic soldier in Soviet war films to crime films in Russian cinema – after the fall of the Soviet Union. How this transition created a paradoxical hybrid of crime and patriotism in a situation where the homeland works against the patriot and in fact the patriot remains without a homeland. The film is spoken in Russian with English subtitles.
