The Burundian Head of State launches the project for the rehabilitation, extension and modernization of the Melchior NDADAYE International Airport

After laying the foundation stone, President Evariste Ndayishimiye reiterated his commitment to strengthening long-standing bilateral relations with China.

With the aim of achieving an emerging Burundi in 2040 and developed in 2060, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye recalled that this project constitutes a major step in the development of infrastructure for the opening up of Burundi.

The Burundian Head of State further revealed that it is with the objective of improving logistics and accessibility in all areas in order to initiate structural transformation for a sustainable economy.

The Burundian Number One also specified that the landing and take-off runway built in 1956, today requires modernization to meet international standards and other air transport requirements.

This Strategic Project includes the rehabilitation of the landing and take-off runway, the extension of facilities, that is to say, the construction of new extensions will increase the airport’s reception capacity, modernization of equipment, the introduction of cutting-edge technologies is planned to improve the efficiency of airport operations, including air traffic management systems and modern security equipment.

President Ndayishimiye stressed the importance of this project for the development of Burundi, saying that it will help stimulate foreign investment and strengthen regional economic relations.

The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Burundi, Mrs. Zhao Jiangping, thanked the Burundian Head of State for his presence at the opening ceremonies of the extension and rehabilitation works of the Melchior NDADAYE International Airport runway. She said that Sino-Burundian cooperation continues to strengthen, bringing tangible benefits between China and Burundi.

Ambassador Zhao Jiangping also said that this project is funded by the Government of China. She announced that China is committed to providing support for the development of Burundi.
