the candidates specify their commitments on education, without convincing the teachers’ unions

They share the diagnosis: the school, tested by two years of health crisis, deserves to be treated as a ” priority “ and that we devote more resources to it. Means for teachers, means for pupils, means for students. But past this observation, the two finalists in the presidential election confirmed, Wednesday, April 20 during their televised face-to-face, that if they were elected, they would not take the same paths.

On the question of teachers’ salaries, the lines have moved. Especially on the side of the candidate president, Emmanuel Macron, who is committed to a “unconditional revaluation” teachers. A signal addressed to this electorate of some 900,000 staff, three days before the second round. Until now, Mr. Macron was campaigning on a salary increase conditional on the accomplishment of new missions – replacement, help with homework… A “new pact” which, since its announcement on March 17 in Aubervilliers, has tensed those concerned.

Change of tone but also of ambition, this Wednesday: “The upgrading has begun under this five-year term, it will continue and will be around 10% for all teachers. There will be no career start under 2,000 euros, it is conditional on absolutely nothing, ” assured Mr. Macron. An annual envelope of 12 billion euros is devoted to education.

The course of the candidate La République en Marche remains the same: to pay more teachers who would do more – the increase “may go up to 20% for those who adopt the most innovative methods”, he asserted. But the candidate president now incorporates this approach – which is reminiscent of the “work more to earn more” of the Sarkozy years – with a broader purpose: a revaluation of all.

Noticeable pass of arms

Opposite, the candidate of the National Rally, Marine Le Pen, has barely changed the objective she has set for the next five years: a 16% increase in teacher salaries by 2027 – against 15 % previously mentioned –; or 3% per year. But that wouldn’t happen without a quid pro quo either. The debate confirmed that Mr.me Le Pen plans to extend the teachers’ working time by an additional half-day. “They will be paid in addition for this half-day at the primary school, on Wednesday morning”, said the candidate. A possible change in school rhythms which does not say its name.
