With the inclusion of 5 new indigenous communities, in the capital of the country there are now 55 distributed in 11 municipalities, which have a different social organization and responsibilities, reported the president of the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM).
Following the recognition of 5 new indigenous peoples in the country’s capital by the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples and Neighborhoods and Indigenous Communities Resident in Mexico City (SEPI), the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) will communicate to its representatives and its inhabitants their new rights, such as the right to organize, elect their authorities and make decisions regarding the Participatory Budget.
Following this recognition, the five territorial units that were previously known as indigenous peoples now have the status of: La Candelaria, in the Coyoacán Municipality; Cuautepec, in Gustavo A. Madero; Iztacalco, in the Municipality of the same name; Rock of the Baths and Mixiuhca, in Venustiano Carranza.
At the ceremony to present the certificates of the Registration and Documentation System for Native Peoples and Resident Indigenous Communities, organized by the Government, Avendaño stated: “the recognition of these peoples, which is being granted by the Secretariat of Peoples and Neighborhoods, implies that we will have to establish contact with those who are now the representatives who carried out these procedures, and we will have to go and inform the inhabitants of these territorial areas: Your category has changed, you are no longer a colony, you are now a people and you have other rights.”
