The carriers, called to strike from midnight

by time news

Professionals in the transport sector are called upon to stop working indefinitely from this Monday from midnight. The goal of the organization that organized the mobilization, the Platform for the Defense of the Freight Transport Sector, is to vindicate the “very serious” situation facing the sector due to the rampant rise in oil prices and the “inadmissible” working conditions of its workers. However, the strike does not have the support of large employers in the sector, who, although they agree in reading, argue that this is not the time to further complicate the situation of the industry, which is suffering the effects of the pandemic and is in full storm because of the war in Ukraine.

Despite this, according to the Efe agency, the convening platform has sent a long list of demands to the ministries of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Labor and the Social Economy. These include a ban on the procurement of road haulage services below operating costs. The Administration – regrets this association – “continues to negotiate with the shippers (who are the members of the National Transport Committeethe CNTC) instead of listening to the SOS calls of the real protagonists of the sector “, which are, he says, the ordinary truckers.

Instead, the Spanish Confederation of Freight Transport (CETM), the majority, with 65,000 companies and 260,000 vehicles (80% of the Spanish fleet), considers that this is not the time to stop. In fact, this entity has actively spoken out against the messages on social media warning of possible failures due to the effect of the shutdown.

In this regard, the CETM has called on the Government to strengthen the actions of the security forces to prevent problems on the roads from this Monday. Interior Ministry sources have assured Efe that the security forces will effectively put in place the necessary operations to ensure normalcy on the roads.

For its part, the state employer Fenadismer and the Transport and Logistics Guild of Catalonia (which is part of the first) have opted for an intermediate option: openly deny support for the strike, but ask for respect for professionals who decide to follow it. Fenadismer points out that the daily increase in the price of fuel has become unsustainable, and that it currently accounts for more than 50% of the operating costs of the business.

Negotiation

Faced with this situation, what the National Road Transport Committee (CNTC) claims is an “urgent and immediate meeting” with the Government to push for exceptional measures, a route they find more effective than the strike. CCOO also considers that the problems of the sector are not solved with strikes “like the one called by a platform of autonomous drivers”, but with negotiation and the opening of a table of social dialogue. The Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Rachel Sanchezhas already announced that in the coming days it will meet with the CNTC to assess the prioritization of some of the measures of the Royal Decree-Law aimed at improving the sustainability of road freight transport, which was approved on 1 March.

One of the measures included in this standard is the establishment of a mandatory revision of the price of transport when the cost of fuel varies from the time of contracting until the actual completion of the transport.
